Custom Made Orthotics
Do you have a diagnosed foot condition? Do you suffer from pain when you walk or exercise? You don’t need to suffer from foot pain or pain in your lower body resulting from your feet. Feet in Motion’s licensed chiropodists are ready to help you alleviate your condition with custom made orthotics.
What are Custom Made Foot Orthotics?
Orthopedic shoes sold in stores, also known as over-the-counter (OTC) arch supports, may provide added comfort if they fit perfectly. That’s a big “if” as store-bought insoles don’t quite line up with the shape and size of your feet. OTC arch supports are also made of lower quality materials than compared to custom orthotics, so they don’t last as long. For a minor foot issue and occasional need, they can help some people. Otherwise, custom orthotics provide a much better solution for foot pain.
Custom made foot orthotics are prescribed by a chiropodist or other qualified medical professional. While both retail and custom made orthotics claim to help with foot pain, only orthotics customized to your feet can truly correct an imbalance in your foot, resulting in significant pain reduction.
Custom made foot orthotics are made for your foot. Feet in Motion has several methods available to recreate the shape of your foot by creating a mold. For example, we can use a 3D foot scanner or plaster material to create a 3D image of your foot. It’s called a negative cast. The cast is sent to a lab where the actual orthotic is created for your foot. Minor adjustments and trimming can be made when you return to Feet in Motion and try on the finished product. Your comfort is paramount to us. We place them in your shoe, and you’re ready to go.
We can make custom orthotics for various types of shoe styles and in several colours and materials. Orthotics can be made full-sized or half-length to fit into your shoes. Your needs to reduce pain are most important to the design of your orthotic but we encourage you to ask about options that fit your lifestyle.
How Do Custom Made Foot Orthotics Help with Foot Problems?
Custom orthotics are designed to support the structures of your foot that cause pain or abnormal functioning by correcting foot mechanics. Your orthotic might be designed to control joint movement that causes pain when you’re walking, running, doing weight bearing exercise, or simply standing. This type of custom orthotic is called a functional orthotic. The second type of orthotic, called an accommodative orthotic, which redistributes the weight in your foot away from areas that create pain or abnormal foot function. The accommodative orthotic offers support and comfort.
How Do I Know if I Need Orthotics?
Custom Made orthotics can help with a variety of foot problems that may cause pain in your feet, heel, knee, hip, and back. At Feet in Motion, we can create orthotics that help to correct foot misalignment and to solve other specific problems such as:
- Corns
- Calluses
- Bunions
- Plantar fasciitis
- Flat feet
- Injuries
- Heel spurs
- Joint pain from arthritis
- Morton’s Neuroma
- Hammer or Claw Toes
- Diabetic care
Don’t ignore your foot pain or pain in your knee, back, or hip caused by potential foot misalignment. If you’re under the care of a chiropodist, ask if a custom made orthotic would help you to relieve your discomfort.
Can I Run and Do Other Activities While Wearing a Custom Made Orthotic?
Yes! Athletes that experience foot problems and pain can benefit greatly from wearing custom orthotics which can stabilize the foot and change the angle of the foot strike while running or walking. They can also absorb the impact that occurs with the foot striking the track, pavement, floor, or other surface. Custom orthotics can prevent injury in athletes and non-athletes alike by improving your stride.
Are Custom Made Orthotics for Everyone?
If you work in an office, serve in a restaurant, work in a factory, or stand and walk all day working retail, you’re putting in a lot of steps by standing on your feet. If you have an issue like calluses or potential issues from diabetes, consult a chiropodist who may prescribe custom made orthotics for one or both feet.
Ongoing conditions like plantar fasciitis can be very painful. Your chiropodist may recommend steroid injections or, in severe cases, surgery. What if you could get relief and avoid invasive treatments? It’s possible to get relief with custom made orthotics designed to alleviate your plantar fasciitis.
Many people suffer from flat feet, or fallen arches, in one or both feet. You can experience muscle pain and instability with flat feet. Once again, custom made orthotics can help lessen the pain you feel and correct your foot alignment for stability.
